Mark Battles – PreSeason: The Underground Story (Mixtape Review)
In today’s crowded rap scene, one artist that has been consistently gaining presence and notoriety is Mid-West emcee Mark Battles. Hailing from Indianapolis, the 22 year old upstart lyricist has already worked with many well-known hip-hop acts including MMG’s Wale, Los and popular newcomer Dizzy Wright. Mark constantly releases new music for his fans and his latest project “Preseason: An Underdog Story” looks to help him keep this momentum going.
What’s different about Mark’s music is the general lack of disrespect towards women, profanity, violence and some of the other hallmarks of some of his peers. More impressively, he does this without coming off as cheesy. The tape starts off with a very honest track appropriately titled “The Truth” where Mark vents about his daughters autism among other personal struggles. This is one of many outstanding tracks, others including the hard hitting “Goodnight”, the laid back “Tears of Gold” and the fun, upbeat “Westside”. Mark showcases his rhyming ability and song writing chops throughout the Preseason project, as a theme of preparation for something bigger permeates from this music.
